The Lord of Rings: The Bossler tunnel – a century project

published 04/2014

Seven segments form one ring and 7,200 rings make one high-tech tunnel. As from July 2014 the construction joint venture PORR and MABA have been demonstrating state of the art tunnel construction when building a 9 kilometer long railway tunnel through the Swabian Alb. The project does not only set a milestone for all companies involved, but also means an important link on the “Magistrale for Europe” the central high-speed axis from Paris to Budapest.

On this route passenger and freight trains will be lead through Europe at a sped of up to 250 km/h. A new section will go through a 35 km wide mountain in Baden Würtenberg – the Swabian Alb.

One of the two tunnels that contribute to the realization of this Trans-European high-speed line goes through the 800 meter long Boßler, protruding from the steep hills of the Southern German low mountain range.  The Boßler tunnel is the core of the newly constructed section between Wendlingen bei Stuttgart and Ulm. The tunnel driving will start mid 2014  and will be finished in 2018.

The Austrian consortium MABA and PORR play a decisive role in the construction of the Boßler tunnel: the companies will line sections of both tunnel pipes with pre-fabricated concrete elements. The entire project can also be regarded as “magistrale” from the dimensional point of view. 230,000 m³ of concrete and 20,558 tons of reinforcing steel will be processed for the tunnel construction.
